In March 2015, MPs voted in favour of plain, standard cigarette packs. This was a huge victory for public health, giving millions of children one less reason to start smoking.
We campaigned for an increase of early cancer diagnosis through more government funding. In 2015, the Government confirmed the NHS would have up to £300m each year until 2020 to invest into diagnosing cancer earlier.
Before plain, standard cigarette packs were introduced, we successfully campaigned to cover up tobacco displays in shops and remove tobacco vending machines.
In 2011, 36,000 supporters called for investment in radiotherapy to make sure world-class services are available to everyone in England.
During covid, it was estimated that around 38,000 fewer people received vital cancer treatment, so we launched the urgent campaign; ‘Safe Spaces for Cancer Services’.
The more junk food ads on TV young people see, the more they eat. In 2016, we launched the Junk Free campaign to introduce restrictions on junk food marketing to children, including a 9pm watershed on junk food advertising and similar restrictions online.
In 2018, we launched our Shoulder to Shoulder Against Cancer campaign in the NHS’s 70th birthday year to ask the UK Government to train and employ more staff to diagnose and treat cancer early.
To protect children from the increased risk of skin cancer through the use of sunbeds, we called for a change to regulations across the UK.
Our Screening Matters campaign secured a Government commitment to screen three million more people over a five year period.
